When President Leonel Fernández unveiled his long-awaited 'democratic security plan' in February to crack down on rising crime in the Dominican Republic, he stressed the strengthening of the national police force and the rooting out of corruption as the bedrock of his plans. This appears to be getting under way. On 6 April state prosecutor José Manuel Hernández requested the start of a high-profile case against 59 police officers, including generals and colonels, for appropriating a total of 118 recovered luxury cars.
